Medical micro needling is a minimally-invasive way to break down damaged skin and old scar tissue while promoting the generation of new skin cells. This procedure involves controlled, gentle skin puncturing that creates new collagen, elastin fibers and new capillaries that increase blood supply to the targeted area. Micro needling is fast becoming a popular treatment for hyperpigmentation and fine lines due to its affordable cost, minimal discomfort and rapid recovery times.

How Micro Needling Works

Micro needling is performed with a small, handheld, pen-shaped device that bears 12 tiny needles. This device is moved over the surface of the skin, where it creates minute needle wounds up to 2mm deep. This stimulation is intended to eventually thicken and plump the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines, deep, pitted acne scars, wrinkles and other aesthetic damages.

What to Expect

Before treatment, the targeted area is cleaned and numbed with a topical numbing cream. A Vitamin-C serum or Hyaluronic acid is often applied to the skin for the reduction of hyperpigmentation and for anti-aging benefits. The adjustable angle of the needles and the ability to increase or decrease needle speeds allows for penetration at a 90 degree angle for faster and more efficient absorption of the topical solutions that have been applied. Once the treatment is complete, additional Hyaluronic acid or Vitamin-C serum is often used on treated areas to hydrate and soothe the skin and expedite the healing process.

Recovering from Micro Needling

As this procedure is minimally invasive, patients can look forward to a brief and relatively pain-free recovery period. Swelling and redness akin to a mild sunburn is likely to persist for up to 48 hours. Patients are commonly advised to protect the dermis with diligent sunblock and zinc oxide applications and to minimize overall sun exposure. It is also beneficial to use loose, mineral powders as an additional layer of sun protection throughout the first few days of the recovery process. While noticeable results can be seen within just two weeks of these treatments, the full effects are often not seen until one to two months have passed.

Additional Benefits of Medical Micro Needling

This treatment is a cost-effective alternative to other resurfacing procedures, and it can be used on all areas of the body, face and scalp, including on sensitive skin such as the dermis around the mouth and eyes. Micro-needling can also significantly enhance the efficacy of topical, anti-aging and hyperpigmentation treatments that are topically applied by allowing for deeper penetration.
